memory foam pillowsNeck and shoulders strains form part of every day life, and memory foam pillows can go along way to help to protect both your neck and shoulders. Many of us appreciate the importance of looking after our necks, but how often do we remember our shoulders?

Shoulder injuries from stress and strain are now becoming more and more common, and many of us neglect to look after our shoulders. Memory foam pillows can help to take a lot of the strain away from your upper back when you sleep, and it is just as important to able to relax your shoulders and upper back as your neck.

There are many conditions that can affect our shoulders which go on to cause problems for our necks and upper spinal column. Some of the are caused by daily activities but an equal amount are caused by sports injuries. Certain sports such as golf, tennis and racquet ball can cause serious injuries which can be helped by using the right pillow.

Frozen Shoulder

A frozen shoulder is caused when the flexible tissue around the shoulder joint becomes inflamed and on occasion it may even thicken. It is not completely understood why this happens but it can be a result of disease. However, most commonly this is caused by poor posture or a strain injury from sports.

Many golfers suffer from a frozen shoulder on a regular basis, and if you look at a golfer’s swing, you will soon realize why this may happen. It is important to stretch the shoulder and the upper back area before you start a golf match but this is seldom something which golfers do. Instead, you will find that most golfers go off and start playing straight away. This can lead to the shoulder muscles and ligaments experiencing a sudden strain or pulling sensation.

Golfers are not even very good at cooling down. They tend to head straight for the 19th hole for a refreshing gin and tonic. After that they often go home and may not even use a good quality pillow. This makes the day’s activities even worse.

Rotator Cuff Injury

There are different types of rotator cuff injuries and many of them are associated with active sports people. They are common in golfers but you will also see them in individuals who practise other sports.

The most common types of rotator cuff injuries are :

Rotator cuff tendonitis, Rotator cuff impingement syndrome, Rotator cuff tear.

Tendonitis is the most common seen rotator cuff injury and this is often brought on suddenly. It is most commonly seen in tennis players and racquet ball players but it is not uncommon in swimmers. It can happen when the major tendon, or tendons, in the shoulder are suddenly forced into action and fibers within the tendons are “fractured”.

Common symptoms include pain and early morning stiffness and it is important to take the pressure of the injury point. Rest and painkillers are often recommended but physiotherapy and using the correct pillow can help a great deal as well. When not treated correctly this can become a frequent injury, and can lead to serious muscle damage in the shoulder. It is a condition which is better prevented that treated.


Bursitis is inflammation of the fluid filled sack which sits within the shoulder joint. It is a very common health condition, and many people have bursitis without even knowing about it. Sometimes this condition is referred to as “Athlete’s shoulder” but many none sports people do experience it as well.

It can be caused by a range of sports activities such as golf and tennis, but is not uncommon amongst long distance runners. If you are a long distance runner it is important to hold both your shoulders and arms correctly when you run. Try to relax so no extra strain is placed on the shoulder joint as this is one of the reasons behind bursitis.

The majority of sports people and athletes do not think they need, or would benefit from, special pillows to look after their shoulders and necks but the opposite is true. All athletes place enormous strain on their body and may even benefit more from protecting their shoulders and neck when they sleep than non athletes. Sadly, this is an often a neglected fact but physio therapists recognize that they can benefit from using enhanced and better pillows.
